NO MAN A HERO.....?

MR DUNCAN MACFARLANE, who in his youth spent four years in service with Sir Henry Campbell- Bannerman, is now a courtly gentleman living in happy retirement in Milngavie.   A month or two ago, he and his wife were kind enough to receive from School a deputation consisting of Miss McLaren and two of the Editorial Committee in search of copy.  It was a real pleasure to us all to hear Mr. Macfarlane's vivid and sometimes humorous reminiscences of journey's to Bologna, Rome and Marienbad, of days at Grosvenor Place, of evening prayers at Belmont Castle, and of meetings with Queen Alexandra (then Princess of Wales), Lord Rosebery, Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) and many other famous people.  Of Sir Henry and Lady Campbell-Bannerman themselves Mr. Macfarlane writes in affectionate terms :

My own memory of them will never fail. They were a devoted husband and wife and a golden example to their fellow creatures - kind and considerate to all their employees and always with a helping hand to the poor and needy.  Their service to the country, to my was of thinking, was never fully appreciated.  We need his help very badly to-day.
