Genealogy

This is my main hobby, I could (and sometimes do) spend hours trying to track down ancestors, cousins etc.

My main interest is in my own family but I'm also making a start on Douglas's side. The main names I am searching for are Duncan, Baird, Clyne, Weir, Gray, but there are so many others. On Douglas's side I'm interested in Craigie, Hoey and Sadler.

Documents : I've amassed a fair amount of information from various sources, I've copied many of them and details can be found in the documents section.

Family Tree :I now have my family tree presented in 2 different ways. Details can be found here, please contact if you recognise any of the names.

Photo Albums : Have a look at Robert Clyne's Photo Album and some of the wedding photos in my collection, click on the Old Photos button to the left.

Here are some other old photos of our ancestors :

My ancestors on my Dad's side are all from Angus, Scotland, primarily from the Montrose area.

This is a photo of my great grandparents, Andrew Duncan and Isabella Nicoll.

Andrew was the gardener at Old Montrose and this photo was taken at the door of their home there.

This is my grandfather's lorry. He was gardener at Old Montrose (like his father) and this picture was taken about 1933 when he won first prize in a town parade. My Dad is the boy on the far right of the picture.

On holiday, in Montrose, a couple of years ago, I spotted a book, "Old Montrose" by Tom Valentine and thought that it would be a nice birthday present for my Dad. Imagine his and my astonishment when we opened it up and this picture was on the inside front page. Tom has many other great Montrose pictures on his web site.

This picture was taken at the Golden Wedding of my great grandparents Robert Clyne and Isabella Davidson.

My grandfather (Robert Duncan) is on the left of the back row, my Granny (Mona Clyne) is on the far right. My Dad is the child seated on the ground on the left. My great grandparents are the couple seated in the middle. This picture was taken in Montrose in 1933

This is my Mum's side of the family, the Bairds. My great grandparents, William Baird and Agnes Thomson, seated at either end of the middle. My grandfather, Jimmy Baird is second from right in the back row.

This is my grandfather, Jimmy Baird (in the middle) with two cousins. Grandpa Baird had a haulage company still in business today managed by my cousin John. See his web site at Bairds.

This is Douglas's side of the family, his great grandparents, John and Tabitha Bain.  They lived in Cromarty where John was a draper, Tabitha was originally from Cornwall. I'd dearly love to know what took John to Cornwall to meet her. Anyway, another curiosity, my great grandfather, Robert Clyne (picture above) was a light house keeper and was posted in Cromarty. I'm sure the two families must have known each other.

I've recently made contact with some of my Macfarlane relatives in the US, here is a picture of Charles Brown Macfarlane and some of the gamekeepers at Mugdock Castle. Charles was the grieve on the Castle estate and lived in a cottage in the grounds. Charles is 2nd from the right.
